Welcoming a new life into the world is a transformative experience, marking the beginning of a beautiful journey called motherhood that not only changes your life, but also your body. A fitness program that meets the needs and challenges of these changes is essential in feeling your best. CrossFit is an incredibly effective way to regain strength, confidence, and overall well-being during this phase. A few of our coaches (and many of our members) at CrossFit CSA are post-partum or pregnant moms themselves. We wanted to share 7 ways CrossFit transformed their lives, empowering them to embrace a healthier lifestyle and a stronger self, and why it is an ideal postpartum fitness program.

 

1. **Tailored Workouts for Every Level**

 

CrossFit is known for its scalability. Whether you're a beginner or a seasoned athlete, CrossFit workouts can be modified to suit your fitness level and post-partum recovery status. Our (Level 2 and above) certified CrossFit trainers can personalize each workout to focus on rebuilding core strength to address pelvic floor issues, improving cardiovascular health, and alleviating the aches and strains common for postpartum women with increased muscular flexibility and joint stability. This tailored approach ensures that post-partum moms can progress at their own pace, promoting gradual and sustainable results.

One of the remarkable aspects of CrossFit CSA is our strong sense of community. Motherhood is a beautiful experience, but can also be lonely and isolating, especially for new moms. Joining a CrossFit gym provides post-partum moms with a supportive environment where they can connect with others who share similar goals and experiences. The camaraderie and encouragement from fellow CrossFitters can boost motivation, as working out with your friends is much more exciting than being on an elliptical alone for 40 minutes. Having coaches who have been through the postpartum period themselves and rebounded into competitive athletes allows them to serve as wealth of information and source of support.

CrossFit emphasizes functional movements that mimic activities of daily life. For post-partum moms, this is particularly beneficial, as it helps them develop strength and endurance needed for tasks like lifting, carrying, and bending – common activities when caring for a newborn. By engaging in these functional exercises, moms can enhance their overall fitness and feel more capable in their daily routines. A strong and healthy pelvic floor is necessary for us to meet the demands of childcare--and having to run to the bathroom constantly is a disruptive and frustrating when we're so busy! Many aspects of CrossFit, particularly the gymnastic movements, rebuild deep core strength, which can alleviate/reduce pelvic floor issues such as diastasis recti, bladder leakage or urgency, and prolapse.

The postpartum period is incredibly rewarding, but also exhausting, and the demands of caring for an infant often leave very little time for ourselves. Few people need the energy boost found from increasing cardiovascular endurance than a postpartum mom! Classes at CrossFit CSA are one hour, including a warm-up, skill-building, and a WOD (Workout of the Day), allowing moms a huge fitness return on the investment of their time.

It is only natural to want to give your child(ren) the best life possible by prioritizing their development and well-being, but few people would wish for their child to give up their health and personal investment once they grow up and become a parent. Children often do what we do, not what we say; committing to the progressive fitness metrics of CrossFit shows our kids to value their health, self-care, and the pursuit and achievement of goals. How we manage our own health will set the template for our children. Mom-guilt is real, but just like we need to put our own oxygen mask on before assisting others, we have to take care of ourselves in order to meet the demands of motherhood.
